Meet Yassin: A Future Civil Engineer with a Passion for Hands-On Learning

Yassin is one of the jolliest students at Kivu Hills Academy (KHA). Born and raised in the Kamonyi district in the southern part of Rwanda, Yassin is the youngest in a family of three children and is 17 years old. As a teenager, he enjoys playing soccer and reading books in his free time.

Currently, Yassin is studying in grade 11 at KHA, specializing in Building Construction. His family inspired him to pursue this trade because it involves practical, hands-on work. When Yassin learned he had been admitted to KHA, he was overwhelmed with emotion. He had heard so much about the school, which, despite being relatively new in Rwanda, already boasts students performing at their best—some even receiving government student loans.

Upon arriving at KHA, Yassin immediately fell in love with the green campus, complete with two hanging flags (representing Rwanda and the USA) displayed at the heart of the school. He appreciated the benches scattered around the campus, offering students a place to relax during recess and short breaks. The stunning view of Lake Kivu perfectly complements the beauty of Boneza, with its picturesque landscapes and pleasant weather.

Yassin is eager to see what this academic year will bring. He is particularly excited about learning new topics in grade 11, especially tile work, welding, and steel bar construction, as these subjects are highly practical—something he always looks forward to. At KHA, Yassin has developed valuable skills such as time management, English communication, public speaking, and prioritizing his faith. Friday Chapel is a mandatory and cherished tradition at KHA, fostering a culture that will never change.

One of Yassin’s favorite aspects of KHA is the feeding program and the equal treatment of all students. He notes that the teachers at KHA are different from those at his former schools. KHA teachers are supportive, approachable, and dedicated to encouraging students to work hard and respect one another, creating a comfortable and motivating learning environment.

Thanks to the scholarship program, Yassin hopes to complete his high school education at KHA. After graduating, he dreams of pursuing higher education in Civil Engineering at university, with the ultimate goal of becoming one of the best engineers in Rwanda.
