Meet Betty: A Future Engineer with a Passion for Sustainable Construction
Betty was born into a family of five siblings. She is currently in grade twelve, pursuing an education in building and construction, with a focus on transforming the future of her home in Boneza. She has a passion for basketball, her favorite sport, and enjoys drawing as a hobby. These unique interests complement her academic journey. She’s particularly excited to learn about innovative materials and methods that can help reduce the environmental impact of construction—topics crucial for developing sustainable infrastructures.
One of her favorite lessons at KHA is the importance of sustainability in construction. Understanding how to create structures that are both functional and environmentally sustainable is incredibly valuable. Additionally, she has acquired skills in tool operation, safety protocols, and proficiency in math. These skills are essential for ensuring that construction projects are completed efficiently, safely, and with precise measurements.
Her inspiration to choose building and construction as her field of study came from a desire to change the history of her home in Boneza. She wanted to contribute to the development of her community by creating durable and sustainable buildings that can stand the test of time. Her passion for basketball has taught her the importance of teamwork and perseverance, while her hobby in drawing allows her to visualize and design innovative structures.
After KHA, Betty hopes to work for a leading construction firm or teach other local constructors sustainable building methods, especially in Boneza. Her goal is to become an engineer, promoting innovative and eco-friendly construction practices. She wants to use her skills and knowledge to make a positive impact on her community and beyond.
When she found out she would be a student at KHA, Betty was overjoyed. It felt like a dream come true, and she was thrilled to have the opportunity to learn so much from KHA. She couldn’t wait to start acquiring construction skills and applying her knowledge in real-life projects.

Boneza, where KHA is located, is a mountainous area with a vibrant culture. The best thing about Boneza is its welcoming community, isolated from urban towns, and the stunning landscapes that surround it. From hills to Lake Kivu, it’s a beautiful place to live and study.
One of the funniest stories from her time at KHA happened during a group project. They were building a model structure, and in their excitement, they accidentally mixed up the measurements. The result was a hilariously lopsided model that they had to quickly fix before presenting it. Despite the initial chaos, it became a memorable and humorous experience that they all laughed about later.
