Joachim is Studying Tourism!

Meet Joachim, a 19-year-old Tourism student in grade 11 at Kivu Hills Academy. He was born in the western part of the country (Rusizi District) in a large family consisting of 4 boys and 3 girls.

He faced a lot of constraints in his education because he is the last born in the family and by the time he should’ve started school, his parents were already going through financial setbacks due the big number of children to take care of at home and send to school. His parents were also getting tired as they climbed in age and no one was willing to give them a job because of this. Joachim’s education journey from elementary throughout middle school is the hardest journey he had to travel.

Upon completing middle school (grade 9), Joachim felt confident that there was no hope of continuing with school and by the time he learned about Kivu Hills Academy (KHA) scholarships he had already dropped out. He learned about the scholarship opportunities from an engineer who he was working for at a local construction site. He immediately requested the contact details of the school principal. KHA’s Principal, Jean Claude gave him all the information he needed to know about the program. One week later he joined KHA.

Joachim is now a very happy and hopeful student who now believes in a brighter tomorrow. He loves bird watching, site seeing and most importantly he loves the fact that he has been able to discover and study various locations in Rwanda since he joined the KHA Tourism program.

Joachim’s dream is to become a conservationist because wildlife and preserving the Rwandan culture are of a great value to him.
